First published in 1968, this is a satirical tale of political rebellion and U.S. intervention in a small Latin American country. Inept leadership and fear of communism are perceived driving forces behind the folly of foreign policy of the time. Kirkus applauded its "prominent name-naming and hilarious typecasting (the ineffectual ambassador, cynical charge d'affaires, uninformed reporter, self-important educator, un-diplomatic idealist)" and noted "[j]ust when the accumulating detail tends to become tedious, Galbraith swings into that finale. It's an adroit performance, obviously loaded, and with some lingering epigrams.".
